News release: Maria's a top class carer

Abstract

Despite English being her second language, Runshaw student Maria Taylor has
performed so well on her course that she's been given a special award at a recent
ceremony at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston.
Maria, 36, from Clayton-le-Woods was born in the Philippines and came over to the UK
in 1990. She was presented with the Tim Curtis Award for Outstanding Progress,
given in memory of the late Tim Curtis, a former Deputy Director of the University
passionate about extending education to those who may have missed out the first time
around. The awards are given to students at the University's partner colleges who have
progressed exceptionally well in the face of difficulty.
Maria, who is a single parent, combines studying for an HNC in Caring Services, with
her job as a support worker for adults with severe learning difficulties. She's now keen
to continue with her studies when she completes her course.
"I've had to work extra hard, but I'm glad I've done it", says Maria. "It's for my sake
and for my 10 year old daughter, Anne-Marie. I now hope to go on to the University to
complete a degree in Social Work."
