Abstract

Mature student and mum of three Kathleen Pomfret has recently been awarded the Tim
Curtis/Partnership Award for the excellent progress she's made on the Foundation
Diploma in Early Years course at Runshaw College.
Kathleen, 45, received a cheque for £150 and a certificate at a special ceremony at the
University of Central Lancashire. The awards are presented to outstanding students at
the University's partner colleges in memory of the late Tim Curtis, a former Deputy
Director of the University, who pioneered access to higher education for those who may
have missed out first time around.
Having worked as a registered childminder for some years and now working actively for
the local National Childminding Association, Kathleen is keen to share some of her
knowledge with others and eventually work with children and families. After she
completes her two year foundation course, she intends to move on to the University in
Preston to complete a degree course to help her in this aim.
"Childminding allowed me to stay at home during my children's early years", says
Kathleen, who has three daughters, Amy, 18, Laura, 16 and Sarah, 13. "But I didn't want
to stagnate and decided to carry on studying to help me get some more qualifications."
