Abstract
Renowned singer-songwriter Ken Nicol, a member of top folk group Steeleye Span,
will soon be staging an extra special performance with a small, but select audience at
the University of Central Lancashire.
Preston-born Ken has been a well-established and respected performer on the folk scene
since the late 1960s in the UK and in the USA, both in terms of his solo career and his
work with bands including The Albion Band with whom he was lead guitarist and
singer during the late 1990s. To complement his music career, he embarked on a
performing arts degree, specialising in contemporary music at the University of Central
Lancashire.
One of Ken's final year modules involves a presentation in front of a group of
examiners and, as part of the work, he has chosen to stage his performance in the very
place where he first performed, the original site of the Harris Folk Club. Entitled 68-03,
his work, performed on the guitar, will be a representation of the 35 years he's spent on
the folk music scene (1968 to 2003). Unfortunately the Harris Folk Club no longer
resides in its 1968 home and staff from the University's External Liaison team have
agreed to vacate their office for the duration of the performance!
Ken, who lives in Ingol, was originally hoping to go on to complete a master's degree at
the University, but may have to postpone his plans as he joins Steeleye Span on their
World Tour next year.
