Abstract
Students from the University of Central Lancashire have put forward their own ideas for a sculpture to be located at Britannia Quay in Preston Dock.
The students, all first years on the BA (Hons) Fine A11 course, worked on a six week project to come up with the designs, in partnership with Preston City Planning Department and funded by Newfield Jones Homes. Their ideas, ranging from the monumental to the amusing can be viewed in the Community Gallery at the Harris Museum and Art Gallery from the 14th to 26th April.
Tutor and Project Manager Barry Midgley, or one of the students themselves will be available to discuss the designs with visitors between 11.00 and 3.00pm, from Monday to Friday. Alternatively, comments can be directed to Barry on bmidgley@uclan.ac.uk, or at the Department of Art and Fashion, University of Central Lancashire.
A wide variety of materials and techniques have been used to produce the designs, although a final choice of materials and scale would only be selected when the full process of consultation is complete. The organisers hope that the exhibition will prompt visitors to express their views on the works and that this will be the start of a process leading to a final design that is innovative, exciting and a positive addition to the Quayside.
