News release: Cosmonauts share secrets of life in space

Abstract

Two distinguished cosmonauts from the Russian space programme will provide a
thril1ing insight into they way people live in space when they give a free public lecture
at the University of Central Lancashire.
Commander Alexander Martynov and Commander Alexander Volkov will share
personal anecdotes and reveal fascinating pictures as part of their evocative talk "Living
and Working on the Mir Space Station" at the University on the evening of Tuesday 11th
March 2003.
Both men are experienced participants in the Russian exploration of space. Commander
Martynov designed and controlled space vehicles landing on the Moon, Mars and
Venus, while Commander Volkov flew as a cosmonaut on board the Russian Soyuz and
the Mir orbital research complex.
The lecture has been organised by the University's Department of Physics, Astronomy
and Mathematics, as part of National Science Week 2003.
Rachel Allen from the Faculty of Science says: "Previous lectures given by cosmonauts
at the University have been extremely popular 'sell outs'. Tickets are free and we're
giving them away on a first come, first served basis so we'd like to encourage people to
contact us as soon as possible if they want to come to this enthralling event."
The lecture takes place between 7pm and 9pm on Tuesday 11 March in the University's
