Abstract
One of the foremost living writers of contemporary Irish fiction will be visiting the
University of Central Lancashire this week.
On Wednesday 19 February, the University is playing host to award winning author
John McGahem, who will be discussing his life and work and reading extracts from his
novels.
John McGahem's books include The Barracks, The Dark (banned in Ireland in 1965),
The Pornographer, The Leavetaking and the 1990 Booker short-listed Amongst Women,
which was later adapted by the BBC. His most recent novel, They That May Face the
Rising Sun, provides a lyrical, poignant account of lives lived on the shores of a lake in
central Ireland.
The event is taking place in the Adelphi TVI Lecture Theatre, Preston Campus, from
7.00 pm to 9.00 pm. Tickets, £4 and £2 (concessions) are available from Karen Adams,
Department of Cultural Studies, tel: 01772 893020. Information about this and other
events in the University's 'Writers and Writing at UCLan' series can be obtained from
the Department of Cultural Studies, tel: 01772 893020.
