Lecturer Energy & Engineering
School of Engineering
After many years in industry, Matt began his academic career in 1999 as a mature student, graduating with BSc Environmental Science from Lancaster University. Research interests led to a PhD in System Identification and Automated Control, quickly followed by post graduate research posts in varied fields from Particle Accelerator Physics to Marine Energy development.
Dr Stables joined the School of Engineering at UCLan in 2012 pursuing further interests in Renewable Energy with the post of Project Engineer for a multi-million pound UCLan/ERDF project promoting renewable energy to small and medium sized businesses in the North West UK. At the same time, Matt completed a Masters degree in Wind Energy Engineering. Upon completion of the project, Matt was encouraged to take on course leaders

Upon completion of the project, Matt was encouraged to take on course leadership duties for undergraduate Energy Engineering courses and became a full time lecturer in energy related modules.
Matt is an active researcher in the field of energy technologies and low carbon innovations. Amongst involvement with numerous project, he is currently developing a novel hydro turbine for use with upland catchments and assessing energy efficiency applications with Graphene in carbon composite materials.
BSc (Hons) Environmental Science (1st class) – Lancaster University, 2002
MSc Wind Energy Engineering (Dist) – UCLan, 2013
PhD ‘System Identification and Control Using State Dependant Parameter Modelling’ – Lancaster University, 2006
