Her research and teaching interests lie primarily in the areas of Company Law and Corporate Governance, particularly on the issues of minority shareholder protection and directors’ duties. Prior to joining UCLan’s Law School, she worked as a Teaching Fellow in Commercial Law at Newcastle University (2014-2016) and a part-time Teaching Assistant in the same institution (2011-2014), where she had been given the opportunity to involve in a variety of teaching and administrative responsibilities such as acting as a module leader, personal tutor, supervisor for both LLB and LLM dissertations, an International Student Tutor, North East Law Review Academic Support and a Mentoring Scheme Co-ordinator.
She holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of Sunderland, an LLM in International Business and Commercial Law from the University of Manchester and a PhD from Newcastle University. During her LLM studies, she became increasingly interested in the recent developments witnessed in the UK of the new statutory derivative action introduced by the Companies Act 2006. This stage of her education sparked her interest to continue research in this field by doing a PhD entitled ‘The UK Statutory Derivative Action: An Opportunity to Bring Justice to Minority Shareholders’. The primary aim of her PhD research was to clarify the purpose and role of derivative actions and critically examine whether those actions can provide justice to minority shareholders through the use of jurisprudential analysis.
Dr. Pitsillidou had presented her research at a variety of leading legal academic conferences, such as the annual conferences organised by the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS) and the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA) as well as at postgraduate research seminars and conferences. She is currently writing an article exploring the recent developments of multiple derivative actions and the justifications behind allowing such actions in the UK. During her PhD studies, she had also been given the opportunity to organise and run Newcastle Law School’s PGR Seminar Series, as well as various PGR conferences, where she had successfully helped to secure funding for the organisation of Newcastle Law School’s inaugural PGR Conference 2014.
Aside from her passion in the areas of Company Law and Corporate Governance, she is always keen to explore and learn about legal education and student learning. As a result, she co-authored in an article based on the educational impact of student law reviews in the UK, an article which is currently available online and will be published in print by The Law Teacher journal in 2017. Due to her passion in finding new ways to enhance student learning, she has been nominated by her students in the academic year of 2013/14, for the Newcastle Students’ Union Teaching Excellence Awards (TEAs) in the ‘Contribution to Outstanding Feedback’ category.
She is also a member of the Society of Legal Scholars, the Socio-Legal Studies Association and an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
