Abstract

"Abstract of a dissertation entitled ‘An analysis into the quality of Tender Documents received by sub-contractors in the UK Construction Industry’ by Andrew Mercer for BSc Quantity Surveying. This research study aims to analyse the documentation received by subcontractors at pricing stage. To thoroughly review the key areas within this study a literature review was compiled providing discussion of the specific subject areas. The use of literature produced by industry professionals was looked at in-depth and a review of the findings was carried out. For this study the method of research chosen was quantitative, primarily because of the area within the study and the questions formulated lending themselves to a more explanatory method of data to being used. The research section of the study consults personnel within the industry to obtain and collate their experiences and opinions to add that information to the literature previously discussed. This was done so through the use of questionnaires. During the initial stages of the dissertation, objectives where identified in which the study would be based. These objectives where initially built upon my own observations and experiences within the specific study area. The relevance of these objectives to the final findings were considered and objectives were met leading to conclusions within the area. There is a weakness within the UK Construction Industry that needs to be addressed to ensure that the quality of information provided to sub-contractors complies fully with the tender document guidance notes. When poor information was received open-ended tenders would be submitted with the use of provisional sums and adjustment to overall job percentage mark-ups. There is a lack of knowledge towards NRM is a definite concern which needs addressing as does the correct application and implementation of the guidance document.
