Abstract

Construction sector contributes greatly to the economic development. However, the activities done by this sector impacts the environment negatively. This research analyses the adverse impact done by the construction sector. The research presents the concept of Sustainability in the construction sector and principles of sustainable construction. . One of the objectives of this dissertation is find out the barriers, benefits, and drivers of sustainable construction in North West England. The research uses secondary data to find out the adverse impact of construction activity on the environment, standards that are considered as criteria for sustainable construction and regulations and implications of sustainable construction practices in North West England. Research has used primary data to ascertain sustainable construction practices, barriers, benefits and drivers in North West England. Questionnaires were used to collect the primary data. The results indicate that the major barrier that sustainable construction in North West England faces is a lack of feedback loops for continuous improvement. Data collected also reveal that North West England construction sector apply principles of Sustainability in creating eco-friendly construction. Increase in awareness of sustainable construction is the major factor that drives sustainable construction in North West England. Based on the findings recommendation are presented, and researcher considers that study of sustainable construction practices is ongoing research the areas of research for future is presented at the end of the report.
