This dissertation is looking at whether age provides a difference in the
construction of national identity in relation to sport. National identity is on the
decline in England and I’m going to try and find out if sport can bring back any
sense of national identity to people’s lives.
The research that will be gathered will be in order to see whether age does show
any difference in people’s own English identity in relation to sport. It is a
completely qualitative study that is based upon in-depth semi-structured
interviews of two separate age groups. (Over 50’s and 16-28).
The research has been carried out in my local area and is only a relatively small
study due to the obvious time constraints and also due to the size of the project
itself. It will look at whether sport can create any differences between the two
different age groups and on a more general level whether national identity
actually means anything anymore?
