Abstract

Preston can now welcome its visitors with a series of new road signs proudly declaring
its city status, with help from the University of Central Lancashire.
The University is celebrating its association with Preston by sponsoring a number of
signs, all based at strategic points of entry into the city. The top section of the sign will
say "Welcome to the City of Preston" with the bottom third carrying the message
"Home of the University of Central Lancashire".
The first one will be unveiled by Sir Tom Finney, an Honorary Fellow of the
University. Sir Tom will be joined by a group of students to perform the 'opening
ceremony' for the sign, which will be placed on Fylde Road, close to the intersection
with Brook Street.
University Pro Vice-Chancellor Ian Haythornthwaite, who was closely involved with
the bid for city status and serves as Chair of the Executive Group of the Preston
Strategic Partnership, said: "This is an opportunity for the University to demonstrate its
close partnership with the city and to advertise the fact that we are proud to be located
in the City of Preston".
