An investigation into the public's travel behaviour, and attitudes towards bus and car use in Blackburn, UK

Abstract

There is a need for a more sustainable, low carbon transport system to tackle issues such as congesting and climate change. Climate change is one of the most important issues of the 21st century and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is now more important than ever. One way to achieve a more sustainable transport system is an increased use of better public transport, but with a private-car based society, the switch from private to public transport is a complex issue that requires good alternatives to the car. This study used a questionnaire, which was completed by both bus and car users, to gain an insight into attitudes and opinions towards public transport and possibilities of private to public transport modal shift. The most significant results show a large acceptance towards the issues created by the car, and findings also point to the potential of initiatives such as bus lanes and Park & Ride services in encouraging more bus use.
