Abstract

Birkenhead is currently going through an exciting time of change along with its sister project the Liverpool Waters. Birkenhead has spent the past decade in the Liverpool’s Shadow from across the Mersey. However PEEL Holdings aim to change that with the Wirral Waters. An estimated 27,000 jobs being created during and after the construction phase, the Brownfield site located on the Docks is set to be transformed into a modern city, with skyscrapers, an international trade centre, and number of new leisure and retail facilities
The aims of this research were to question the residents of Birkenhead on their awareness of such a project. This would be followed up by what they would like from the Wirral Waters and what they believe to be the most important aspects of regeneration. Whilst checking to see if PEEL Holdings have organised any public events that the residents of Birkenhead and the surrounding area of the Wirral might want to, or have already previously been too
The Waters has garnered a lot of excitement within Birkenhead, mainly due to the number of jobs they stated will be created. The residents who participated in the questionnaires have indicated that job and affordable accommodation based development is what they are after. Finally it should be worth noting that construction and development of the targeted sites is still yet to fully begin. PEELs Status of running the project was called in question; however it remains as a flagship project for PEEL, whilst representatives from the Wirral Supercouncil and PEEL Holdings continue searching for Chinese investment
