Abstract

The public sector of Nigeria has been undergoing review in order to improve the award of procurement contracts in the public sector. Professional bodies and academics have written widely on the subject. This dissertation investigates the benefits of embracing the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) methodology in the Nigerian public sector. Some comparison with the experience of using PFI in the UK, is attempted. The methodology used was quantitative, in order to obtain views anonymously and to try to minimize bias. A questionnaire was devised, tested and then used to gather the information. The population of the survey was professionals working in the Nigerian construction industry and academic researchers. The questionnaire comprised 14 questions and was distributed electronically. 70 responses were received. Data were analysed with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The sample size proved to be small to support firm conclusions but it was possible to make three recommendations that would likely enhance the effectiveness of PFI in Nigeria.
