An Investigation in to the Quality of Affordable Housing in the UK ~ Quantity vs Quality ~

Abstract

An investigation into the quality of affordable housing in the UK. Should the demand be fulfilled by the Government or are the private sector house builders keeping up with demand of good quality housing? The main aim of the project is to investigate the provision of affordable housing quality. The two interviewees where from the North West, however the company they work for is a national company and well known. The small sample interviewed to allowed succinct contrast of their responses in contrast to the literature review. The literature review in chapter 2 supports the hypothesis that the Government wants to achieve X number of affordable houses, but it is down to private sector housebuilders to bear the duty and provide this. The interviews of two senior managers from the house building found that there is a reluctance to provide AH. This may be for several reasons. One reason is that housebuilders may feel that AH is a burden placed on them by the planning system. House builders want to build houses that the customers/buyers want. The planning system seeks to ensure that AH is provided through the use of s.106. However the interviewees have provided responses that would suggest that were possible they try to mitigate there AH quota or reduce their contributions in favour for profit.
