Abstract
"Building information modelling (BIM) has infiltrated the world of AEC industry which is rapidly evolving. The BIM revolution is now a centrepiece within the AEC industry which encompasses all aspects of the design, construction, and lifecycle of the built asset. (Eastman, Teicholz, and Sacks, 2011) Still, some of the organisations accept the new process and as proven to be successful, yet others question whether it’s how it will benefit the industry. Questions are raised on the definitions of BIM ‘is it a tool or just another process, and how will it affect the design stage within the construction process?’ These questions will form the basis of the research.
The body of the literature discovers the relevant issues identified within the AEC industry, this research investigates the pros and cons of implementing BIM into the construction process at the design stage and throughout the lifecycle. The investigation will identify potential gaps within the industry, accessing the legal process to who claims liability of a defective building at the design stage; benefits of clash detection and what standards and publications are available to help integrate a better future for the UK’s AEC industry.
The findings from the research will clarify that the success of BIM has proven to grow throughout the UK, more awareness across the nation and better cost reductions. The approach method and tools will prove to develop enhanced learning and savings through the implementation of the digital technologies such as BIM. (Bew, 2015) The success of BIM ready imposed by the government is well on its way through its early life of maturity as it moves towards its Level 3 BIM. The findings of the research clearly identify that the client (Government) show that a benchmark of collaboration, drive of innovation will develop a better industry for the UK economy."
