Labour shortages in the construction industry and its implications

Abstract

Study: the purpose of this study is to evaluate the labour shortage in the construction industry, the history of how the shortage came about and ways in which to rectify the issue. The main focus areas of research are which sectors are most affected by the shortage will be identified, reasons for why they have occurred and ways in which the problem can be dealt with.
Method: In the first part of the study a literature review has been carried out in order to establish the similar reoccurring themes and to establish areas in which further research can be carried out.
Findings: The findings from the literature review in chapter 1 supports the primary research undertaken in chapter 4 in the form of a questionnaire. The main findings being a lack of apprentice schemes, training and the government policies.
Conclusions: From the findings the gaps in rectifying the issue have been identified. Having these in hand ways in which the issue can be resolved have been addressed. Some are short term and others on a longer-term gain. These include new government policies on training grants and apprentice schemes, investing in the younger generation and also having attractive career prospects.
