Abstract

Following widespread criticism towards the UK construction industry in recent years, the Government has commissioned various studies to assess these perceptions and furthermore, published a strategy in 2011 to drive forward a change within the industry. This publication mandated all centrally procured Government projects to achieve a level of BIM maturity of 2, by 2016. The adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) is seen as the vehicle to achieve the required evolutionary processes within the industry, with the ultimate goal of interoperability and collaboration to increase economic stability. The Government commissioned the BIM Task Group to support organisations to understand the meaning of BIM and have produced many forms of guidance to aide implementation of BIM.
This study aims to provide and summarise this guidance by the form of a roadmap, which aims to assist small to medium enterprises (SME’s) on their understanding of BIM. This study will also show how the SME is assessed against the maturity levels set and furthermore, highlight processes that require further development to aide progression.
