Abstract

Various international agencies are faced with the challenge of sustainability. For the sake of economic growth it is necessary to attain levels of sustainability in order to ensure that there is continuity in life. In most countries, agriculture is considered to be an engine of growth and therefore, it is taken with utmost importance. Furthermore, international trade relies on the production that is obtained from the agricultural sector. Project management is an essential element in the agricultural sector and most especially in Chinese economy which has become popular among researchers. The aim of this study was therefore to explore how the use of modern agricultural project management techniques could boost development of the citrus industry, leading to quality production, expansion of sales markets, and increased brand awareness. The objectives that were formulated for the study included to establish the role of modern project management techniques in agricultural development, to investigate the problems facing the Guangfeng Ma Grapefruit Industry in China and to explore feasible solutions to Guangfeng Ma Grapefruit Industry’s problems, through modern agricultural project management techniques. Data was collected using the qualitative method which utilised the interviews as the instrument of data collection. Employees of Guangfeng Ma were the sample size. The study found out that there are various challenges that are facing citric farming such as low production, unfavourable land terrain and unfavourable climatic conditions. Sustainability issues in agriculture were found to be gaining momentum in the country. Therefore, the study concluded that the industry has evidence of growth in the next five years.
