Abstract
Betwixt fiction and documentary’ reveals Imamura’s development as a filmmaker through reference to historical events that shaped the style and form of his work. Imamura traces his quest for an authentic cinematic to his involvement in the black market in the years immediately after Japan’s surrender and occupation. ‘Betwixt fiction and documentary’ also gives the background to why Imamura turned his back on commercial filmmaking for most of the 1970s.
