Abstract

In 2005 WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums) produced the
World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Strategy; outlining eight guiding
principles to aid world zoos in meeting sustainability objectives; BIAZA,
adopted these principles and encourage their members to use them as a tool
to implement sustainable practices throughout their organisations.
This research has sought to Identify whether or not the eight guiding
principles set out by BIAZA were being implemented by its members and the
extent to which these principles were being carried out. Further to this data
pertaining to the expectations of the general public, with respect to the
environmental commitments of zoos has been gathered and analysed.
In doing so it has identified the main areas of concern as; environmental
training, recycling, environmental/waste auditing, green procurement, and
waste figures.
Members of BIAZA have shown a lack of awareness with respect to their
obligations to implement the eight guiding principles for sustainable
development. Furthermore the role of green teams and environmental policy
has proven to be an area of great interest. While core educational activities
should remain there is recognition that zoos should incorporate them with
educational programs and active participation pertaining to environmental
issues.
