Abstract

The aim of this work is primarily concerned with finding out whether the access to
(or lack of access to) private transport by residents of rural towns has a significant
impact on the wealth and more importantly the relative deprivation/poverty of said
residents. In order to achieve this I chose two rural towns within a primarily rural
county and an urban area within that same county to use as a control. The research
can be seen as truly original as the link between private transport and rural
deprivation is seldom mentioned and academic writing is more focused on urban
deprivation. Conducting surveys with a large amount of results despite a small
sample size this research tries to comprehensibly explain the links between lack of
access to transport and rural deprivation both through original research and review
of secondary literature. Then using tables and inferential statistics the paper tries to
prove its aims and push forward the motion of bringing to the forefront the under
studied and under politicked for rural minority who are suffering from deprivation.
Despite its drawbacks this paper tries to bring under its scope a wide problem which
is underappreciated and understudied.
