Abstract

The following report is a study of which examined the extent to which urban
regeneration efforts at Holbeck Urban Village, Leeds are creating a sustainable
community. How sustainable community development can be incorporated within
urban regeneration provided the main focus of this study due to the awareness of
oxymoron of the urban village and its urban form.
In order to assess the effectiveness of sustainable community development within
Holbeck Urban Village, this empirical study adopted the use of in semi structured
interviews from a variety of stakeholders as well as an environmental quality survey
undertaken in 6 different areas throughout the urban village.
The conclusions suggest that Holbeck Urban Village has the potential to create a
sustainable community, however there are various issues in order to accomplish all the
aims of the Sustainable Communities Plan. Fundamentally, the research discovered
that the slow rate of urban change due to the economic downturn over the last years
few years has significantly affected the extent to which Holbeck Urban Village can
create a sustainable community.
