Paper v Fabric v Paper – A perception of the publics perceived knowledge surrounding the life cycle of grocery bags.

Abstract

Transporting groceries from the supermarket is usually done by carrying the items
bought in a bag or box or some sort. The variety of bags provided by supermarkets has
rapidly changed over recent year as the use of throwaway plastic bags has become
increasingly a matter of significant debate. Various protest groups, campaigns and
legislation have been introduced aiming to cutting down throwaway plastic bag usage
around the globe. In some counties the use of plastic bags has been totally banned.
The Life Cycle Assessment of the most popular grocery bags has been used in this
paper with the intention of gaining a clear view of the environments impacts associated
with the extraction, manufacture, transportation and waste issues associated with the
most frequently used bags. Recent research has been used to identify the human
health risks associated with the life cycle of grocery bags and are discussed in this
paper.
The majority of the research was carried out using an internet based survey site
www.freeonline surveys.com and was launched on the social networking website called
Face book, the advantages and disadvantages of using this method of data collection
are discussed, the data collected was both quantitative and qualitative.
The results indicated that even after being given a series of facts associated with the
negative aspects of their chosen bag that it would influence what choice they made in

the future. The research concluded that people’s attitudes and behaviour can be altered
by giving shoppers information associated with their chosen method of transporting
good from the supermarket.
