Is Nuclear New Build a viable option for the UK with regards to the disposal of High Level Waste?

Abstract

It is apparent from this independent research project and others’ previous works
that the disposal of High Level Waste (HLW) is at the forefront of the British
public’s concerns. This study has been conducted contextually, in that there are
strong indications that nuclear new build is a strong possibility for the UK,
however by reviewing Britain’s preparedness for permanent HLW disposal, it is
clear that this aspect has not been treated as a priority.
There are many countries worldwide adopting nuclear power as a major
contributor for future energy production. Two current builds at the time of writing
are Olkiluoto 3 in Eurajoki, Finland; and Flamanville 3 in Normandy, France.
Both of these examples have advanced permanent High Level Waste disposal
projects; by comparing Britain’s plans with those of France and Finland; it has
been possible to highlight where changes are needed to help improve public
acceptance of nuclear with regards to the disposal of HLW.
It became apparent during this study that public acceptance of nuclear energy
itself has improved over recent years; however it was also found that the public
have a general lack of knowledge on the subject when compared to alternative
energies. Many were unaware nuclear energy is a low carbon industry; and also
were ill educated as to the realistic dangers of HLW. It was concluded that
permanent waste disposal plans need to be developed as a priority to gain
public trust. A high degree of transparency in future plans will be essential for
public acceptance.
