To what extent are attitudes towards redevelopment in Barrow in Furness influenced by age and gender?

Abstract

Barrow in Furness is a town in the north west of England with a history of iron ore,
shipping and shipbuilding but needs investment and planning to continue growth.
Barrow and the local people relied heavily on the shipyard for jobs and income but
over the past 5 years demand for vessels and submarines have been decreased.
Leaving people in Barrow without jobs and prospects, without any changes to the
town it will continue on a downward spiral. A new dockland development is planned
for the town with mixed land use ranging from a business park and housing marina
village. The dockland waterfront development is hoped to help the town and trigger
further changes within the town. Local people will have views on the changes to the
town and the impact that it can have on the people and future generations.
This research analyses public perceptions of age and gender of people in Barrow.
By gathering local opinions an understanding can be made of how people will take to
or reject the developments that are to be put in place. 140 questionnaires out of an
aimed 160 were completed by local people these were broken down by 20 people in
each age group and gender to give well rounded views. Interviews were also under
taken with people implementing the developments and a public meeting was
attended to make observations and gather opinions
