Abstract
The 1992 Common Agricultural policy reforms, known as the MacSharry proposals
were to have a positive impact on the countryside of the European Union. This study
will assess the impact of this reform’s policies on farming practices in West
Yorkshire.
The effectiveness of subsidising set-aside land and a shift in focus, from
productivism to environmental awareness and less intensive production, and the
changes (if any) it has made to part of the British countryside will be assessed.
Current literature will also figure largely in the study as much has been written on
predicted and observed impacts of the common agricultural policy.
The research will be conducted in two ways, collection of data from the
DEFRA countryside survey. This data will be tabulated and presented in graph form.
The geographical information systems package, The Countryside Information System
will also be used to analyse date form the countryside survey.
