The perception of Preston as a tourist destination

Abstract

This project looks at the perception people have of Preston as a tourist
destination, both locals and visitors. This was done through talking to people
via questionnaires and face to face, council plans were also taken into
account. Around 30 people were asked, drawing a variety of conclusions.
People liked living in the city because of its compact size; people were not in
favour of tourism being made into a major industry if it sacrificed the reasons
they enjoy living there. On the other hand people were in favour of tourism
due to the extra money, jobs and new developments it brought to the city. The
answer therefore is somewhere in the middle; re-development of the city to
bring people in to stop the city stagnating whilst still keeping the compact,
safe qualities. Tithebarn regeneration seeks to be this answer by knocking
down older derelict parts of the city and building new housing, shops, offices
and much needed inner city leisure attractions and hotels which were also
found to be hindering the cities tourist industry. Tithebarn regeneration
appears to answer the problems the city has and providing it is implemented
in the correct manor the city will maintain its charm and start to attract many
more visitors.
