Moving to Manchester: Explaining The New Migrants to Inner City Manchester.

Abstract

Manchester has made a dramatic turn around in the past two centuries, undergoing
extreme development and re- imaging in such a short period of time. The city has
welcomed the growth in economy due to the high level of services and the selfpromotion
of the city through the media. This research draws upon the powers of the
Manchester to pull in an ever- increasing residential population. My research question is
an aim to gain a greater understanding as to why people have chose to move into the city
centre of Manchester. My aims and objectives seek to analyse people attitudes and
opinions of how the space is being used and whether they believe that the regeneration
that has occurred in the city centre is the right kind of regeneration and if they feel that
culture is being lost as a result. Observational data in the form semiotic readings is used
to help with the understanding of the empirical data collected from the residents of
Manchester through the use of postal questionnaires.
The results of my research showed that the lifestyle, leisure activities and the nightlife
offered by the city centre were not the initial factors attracting people to the area. The
main factors were the job opportunities and the universities. Living in the city centre is a
convenience being within close proximity to work, the universities, leisure pursuits and
amenities. The research found that the lifestyle, leisure activities and the nightlife are just
the bonus of living in the city centre of Manchester.
