Abstract
In December 2016, three highly regarded British printmakers embarked on an innovative research project in the Hunter region, through an international residency at the Lock Up Cultural Centre in Newcastle’s east end. Over three summer weeks, artists Greg Fuller, Jason Hicklin and Tracy Hill investigated the landscape of the Hunter estuary, exploring the historical, geographical and human connections between it and the coastal environments of Mersey Estuary in Liverpool, England.
Through their research, the artists investigate how ideas of navigation and walking have a direct correlation to our understanding and relationship to landscape and place. By experiencing a landscape in a multisensory way, the artists suggest that wayfaring can give rise to local cultural understanding of the unique and transitory properties of a certain place.
The artists return to Newcastle to present an exhibition of their visual reinterpretations of the Hunter landscape as experienced through their walking journeys. Common Ground Pacific will be held across two locations, the University Gallery and Curve Gallery, Newcastle.
