Abstract

In this chapter we consider the concept of public value, its importance and relevance for space policy, and how it represents a new way of looking at space with great potential for policy actors. We begin by unpacking the concept of public value and the implications of its’ wider perspective on space beyond economic efficiency and market performance. We then turn to the implications and insights for policy issues and their analysis and resolution. Using a framework approach, we consider emerging governance architectures in polycentric policy contexts and speculate how a public value perspective may help unlock the unique opportunities offered by space, its associated technology and future programmes.
